Section outline

    • Why use Moodlebox on a Raspberry Pi? Well if you want to help keep students honest, you have no internet in your location, you want to keep things private, etc. There are a variety of reasons why you might want this set up.

This came about because many teacher friends teach EFL students and wanted to be a bit more confident that the work they were doing is their own without the help of web based translation or AI.

    • First download Raspberry Pi Imager
      https://www.raspberrypi.com/software/

Select the download for your version of OS.

Select the type of computer OS you are using.

Next insert your Micro SD card into the adapter then insert in your computer

Open the Raspberry Pi Imager application

      The RaspberryPi imager software.

      Next Choose Device

      Choose you device version.

      Next Choose OS

Choose the OS you want to install, select Other specific-purpose OS

Scroll until you see Other specific-purpose OS and select that option, then scroll until you see Moodlebox

      Scroll until you see Moodlebox.

              Select Moodlebox v4.8.0

Select Moodlebox option and then Choose Storage and select your SD card

Select the storage device to install on.

Now click on the Next button.

      Select the NEXT button.

Now you need to use OS customization and select Edit Settings

      Select Edit Settings

Choose No for the next option.

      Select No

Now you are presented with many options to edit.

Many options to edit, but only really Set hostname needs to be edited.

Make sure to change the Username & Password to something you will remember but difficult. Security is your friend.
Make sure the “Configure wireless LAN is unchecked.”
Set locale settings as needed, especially your keyboard layout.

Now check the Services section next.

             Select Sevices

Make sure you have “Enable SSH” checked. Decide if you want Password authentication or public-key authentication. Then click SAVE.

Now it is time to write to the Micro SD card.

      Select No again

It might ask you to verify you want to erase and write to the SD card, click Yes and enter your PC login password if needed.

Then wait while it writes to the SD card.

      Select Yes

Enter your computer password if asked.

               Wait while writing to device

Next verifying the writing to device

Then when finished remove the SD card and click CONTINUE

Now put the SD card into your Raspberry Pi and turn the power on. Please wait for about 3 to 5 minutes for it to start up.

    • First you will need to connect to the Raspberry Pi’s Wifi,
Look for Moodlebox in the list of available wifi hotspots.

Select MoodleBox as your Wi-Fi network

Enter the default password to connect to the Raspberry Pi’s wifi which is:

      moodlebox

      Enter the default password: moodlebox

Once connected you will no longer have access to the internet and only access to what is on the Moodlebox installed on the Raspberry Pi.

    • Now it is time to connect and login to your Moodlebox website. Open a browser and go to:

      http://moodlebox.home

Open browser and go to moodlebox.home

Now click the Log In link in the top right corner.

Click Log in in the top right corner

Now enter the default username and password.

      Username: moodlebox
      Password: Moodlebox4$

      Enter username and password.

Now that you are logged in, you need to click on the Site Administration link in the Top Bar.

      Next click on MoodleBox.

Click on Site Administration on the top.

Now you need to click on MoodleBox Dashboard. (DO NOT CLICK MoodleBox Settings).

Select MoodleBox and then select MoodleBox Dashboard

The top section of the Dashboard gives you some basic information. But the 2 highlighted ones are your main concern.

Scroll further down until you get to the parts shown below.

The sections that you might need to change

When you make changes to each sections you need to click Change … for each part separately.

So the first section is MoodleBox password. Please change this as this is the Admin account password and if someone gets ahold of the password, you could potentially locked out. So change this first and then you will need to log in again to access the Site Administration.

               Change this section.

After you have changed the password and logged back in, next is the Wi-Fi setting. You only need to change these if you are using 2 Raspberry Pi in one class or you want to add another layer of protection. It is always good policy to change default passwords no matter what!

      Change only if necessary

Click Change wi-Fi setting. You might have to reconnect to the Wi-fi after changing the settings. If so, do it and then you can go to the next part.

    • Click the Home button at the top left then click the Add a new course at the bottom.

      Add a new course

Now you need to fill in the different information about the course. If in doubt, you can click the “?” button for information about each section. But for the sake of this tutorial, I will do the bare minimum and keep it simple.

Name the course and course short name
Write the course description and add an image for the course if necessary.
Change anything you want if necessary.

             Finish up and click Save

Click the Save and display button to see the simple course that you set up.

And now you have your fist course ready to add material and assignments.

Click on the Skip tour button then in the top right click the Edit mode toggle switch so you can start to add course related materials, assignments, quizzes, etc to your new course.

      Select the activity to create.

Now you can start to add to the course. First click the “+ Add an activity or resource” button.

Now you can see all of the default activities and resources you can add to your course. Let’s start with a simple assignment. There are various options such as, Add files for students to download, due dates, file upload, online text input, etc

Name the assignment and add the details as needed.
      Select any options as needed.
Select Save and return to course.

Click “Save and return to course”

Now you can see your first assignment listed. If you left everything as default, you will see the Open and Due dates.
